A wet morning meant bird activity was minimal, brighter weather after lunch revealed that the two male Ring Ouzels were still present on the eastern edge of the reserve, at times showing well. A Great White Egret was reported flying east along the shoreline mid morning and  two Long-tailed Ducks and a Slavonian Grebe were on the sea. Other birds of note included a Merlin, Short-eared Owl, Woodcock and a pair of Stonechat.

Visible migration was notable today especially during the morning with an estimated 5000 starlings at least moving along the coast, with smaller numbers of Lapwings, thrushes, finches and Skylarks also noted plus a single Woodlark. Two Ring Ouzels were along the eastern edge of the reserve for the majority of the day, a male Hen harrier few west mid afternoon and other notable species included a Peregrine, Short-eared Owl and Rough-legged Buzzard. On the sea there was a Slavonian Grebe, 14 Red-breasted Merganser, 8 Goldeneye and a Long-tailed Duck off Gore Point.

Another interesting day of visible migration included a Rough-legged Buzzard, a Long-eared Owl and 6 Crossbills; whilst a Snow Bunting was seen on the beach.

Other highlights throughout the day included Spotted Redshank, Woodcock, 2 Chiffchaffs, 4 Blackcaps, a Grey Wagtail, 10 Rock Pipits, 6 Bramblings and 7 Redpolls among a variety of commoner migrants.

A good day for visual migration with the biggest highlight 3 WATER PIPITS caught this morning!

A group of 6 Common and 1 Rough-legged Buzzards came in off the sea and flew off in various directions. A Spoonbill flew east over the grazing marsh and Barn Owl, Short-eared Owl, Peregrine, Cetti's Warbler, Chiffchaff, Blackcap, 3 Fieldfares, 12+ Redwings, 2 Stonechats, a Grey Wagtail, 10 Bramblings, 20 Redpolls, 8 Siskins and 18 Reed Buntings also of note.

A Yellow-line Quaker was in the moth trap.

Sunday 25th October 2015

A Short-eared Owl spent most of the day on the grazing marsh in front of the observatory, with a vocal Spotted Redshank around the Broadwater during the afternoon. A noticeable movement of Skylarks took place during the morning, with ten Crossbills, five Brambling and six Siskin also noted. Late Swallows (2) and a House Martin were seen over the broadwater and other birds of note during the day included Greenshank, Peregrine, Stonechat (2) and Kingfisher.

Rain moved in again today with the highlight being a superb Rough-legged Buzzard west just south of the Broadwater, and a ring-tail Hen Harrier passing some time later. A Barn and Short-eared Owl were hunting and a Cetti's Warbler was trapped and ringed. Other birds of note included Grey Wagtail, 6 Rock Pipits, 9 Bramblings, and 8 Siskins. A Pearly Underwing moth was in the trap.

On the sea today 1500 Common Scoters, 2 Velvet Scoters, 26 Gannets, 8 Great Crested Grebes, and a Slavonian Grebe were recorded, and around the reserve 4 Water Rails, a Spotted Redshank, a Barn and a Short-eared Owl were of note. A flock of 420 Golden Plover were up over the ridge, and at Gore Point a Peregrine was seen. Other migrants included a Fieldfare, 4 Song Thrushes, 6 Redwings, 2 Stonechats, 50 Meadow Pipits, 10 Rock Pipits, 2 Bullfinches, 180 Greenfinches, 65 Goldfinches, 10 Siskins, 2 Lapland Buntings and 30 Reed Buntings.

With westerlies dominating there was some visible migration this morning with 30 Skylarks, 350 Starlings, 1 Fieldfare, 2 Tree Sparrows, 45 Meadow Pipits, 4 Rock Pipits, 18 Bramblings, 40 Chaffinches, 4 Bullfinches, 125 Greenfinches, 12 Redpolls, 30 Goldfinches, 1 Siskin and 25 Reed Buntings passing over west. On the sea 400+ Common Scoters, 50 Gannets, and a Great Crested Grebe were noted, while Snipe, Spotted Redshank, Barn Owl, Short-eared Owl, Peregrine, and Cetti's Warbler were also of note.

Migration was winding down a bit today ahead of the weather due in tomorrow. On the sea 3 Eiders, a Red-throated Diver, 10 Gannets, 20 Great Crested Grebes, and 6 Razorbills were of note, while on the reserve a few more Goldcrests were still present but there was no further sign of the Great Grey Shrike. Barn, Tawny and Short-eared Owls were seen today, 3 Bearded Tits were along the east bank, a single Swallow went through, and 5 Blackcaps, 3 Stonechats, 5 Rock Pipits, 16 Bramblings, 16 Redpolls, and 20 Siskins were of note.

Monday 19th October 2015

The highlight of today was a Great Grey Shrike which perched in the pines on the NOA reserve and sang! Seen around 2pm the bird had been seen briefly earlier in the afternoon and came up again to enjoy the sunshine before disappearing into the trees.

Migration continued today with at least 120 Goldcrests still on the reserve - including one sunning itself on the bench in front of the Obs, and another 50 ringed, indicating these are still moving through the site. A flock of 18 Bearded Tits was circling high over the east bank and 4 Blackcaps were noted. 25 Blackbirds, 8 Fieldfares, 10 Song Thrushes, 25 Redwings and 40 Robins were also in the area, a Grey Wagtail flew over calling, and 5 Siskins also passed overhead. Three Barn Owls were hunting the marshes early morning.

A Humming-bird Hawk Moth was still feeding at the buddleias.

A Rough-legged Buzzard and Siberian Chiffchaff were seen at Walsey Hills.

Goldcrests continued to dominate ringing activities today with a further 21 caught and at least 150 on the reserve. Many of these birds are now leaving and those still here are carrying fat - one female had a fat score of 4 and weighed 6.2g!

On the grazing marsh near the entrance to the NWT reserve 2 Great Grey Shrikes were still present, and the Pallas' Warbler was again seen in the forestry.

Visual migration included 51 Redwings, 1 Fieldfare, 1 Mistle Thrush, 50+ Redpolls over east early morning and at least 40 Greenfinches, 5 Bramblings, 3 Grey Wagtails, 6 Siskins, 26 Meadow Pipits, and 5 Rock Pipits. Also of note were a Greenshank, Kingfisher, 2 Water Rails, 16 Bearded Tits, a Yellow-browed Warbler and 6 Blackcaps.

At Walsey Hills a lingering flock of Bramblings grew to 29 birds, often seen in the bushes surrounding the feeding area. 2 Grey Wagtail, 1 Greenshank and 1 Snipe were feeding on Snipe's Marsh for much of the day , 13 Redwing were seen around the reserve and late in the afternoon a Great Grey Shrike was seen perched in bushes near the East Bank.
