COVID Safety on Our Reserves: Under present circumstances access to Seawatching and Car Park hides is now possible by agreement for up to four people, but please be considerate of others in view of ongoing COVID risks. For our other hides, due to size, we continue to recommend one household at a time only. The Observatory building remains closed to visitors at present and we will continue to provide hand sanitiser on site for all visitors entering and leaving reserves.

Holme Bird Observatory Monday 17th January 2022

A colour-ringed Peregrine was in trees at the back of Drove Orchard and a Greenshank was in Thornham Harbour. On the grazing marsh 800 Golden Plover, 1700 Lapwings and 12 Black-tailed Godwits were of interest.

Holme Bird Observatory Thursday 13th January 2022

On the sea today 3 Eider, 2 Common Scoter, 2 Goldeneye, 16 Red-breasted Mergansers, 6 Red-throated Divers, 3 Fulmars, 7 Great Crested Grebes and 4 Kittiwakes were the highlights, with 23 Snow Buntings along the beach off the Golf Course. On the marsh 600 Golden Plover, 350 Lapwings, 15 Black-tailed Godwits and 5 Snipe were seen.

On the sea there were single Long-tailed Duck and Great Northern Diver, plus a count of thirty Great Crested Grebes. Twenty four Black-tailed Godwits were on the new scrapes at Thornham and a Great Spotted Woodpecker was in the pines by the Observatory.

On the sea today Great Northern and Black-throated Divers were reported together with a Slavonian Gebe and 4 Red-breasted Mergansers. A second winter male Hen Harrier was hunting low over the marsh early afternoon and a Merlin flew west.

Holme Bird Observatory Sunday 9th January 2021

On the sea today 4 Eider, 48 Common Scoter, 32 Red-breasted Mergansers, 9 Red-throated and 2 Great Northern Divers, 5 Great Crested Grebes and 9 Little Gulls were seen. A Chiffchaff was near the village hides and at the back of Drove Orchards at least 30 Fieldfares were seen. A pair of Stonechats were beside the Observatory building.

A flyby drake Long-tailed Duck and a Great Northern Diver on the sea were the highlights of an early morning seawatch. A Great White Egret was around the Broadwater and a pair of Stonechats were along the East bank and around the vicinity of the Obs building.

Two Great Northern Diver, a male Eider and a male Goldeneye was the best the sea had to offer this morning. A Great White Egret was feeding with two Little Egrets in the tidal channel on Lavender Marsh.

Sunny but with a very cold north-westerly wind, on the sea a Red-throated Diver, 2 Great Crested Grebes, a Fulmar, 3 Gannets and a Velvet Scoter were seen. A Barn Owl was hunting at the back of the village, a Cetti's Warbler and a pair of Stonechats were still near the Obs and a single Fieldfare dropped into the pines.

A Red-throated Diver and a single Fulmar passed at sea, with a Great White Egret feeding on the marsh, a Red Kite drifting over, a Water Rail heard from the Broadwater edge and 5 Ruff with the Golden Plover flock. A single Fieldfare dropped in near the Broadwater hide and a pair of Stonechats were feeding near the Observatory building.

On the sea today 7 Eider, 2 Red-breasted Mergansers, a Red-throated Diver, 4 Fulmars and 4 Great Crested Grebes were seen. A Barn Owl was hunting near the village and a Woodcock was flushed near the village hides.

Holme Bird Observatory Saturday 1st January 20221

On the sea today, one Eider, 41 Common Scoter, a Goldeneye, 9 Red-breasted Mergansers and a Great Crested Grebe were seen, while on the grazing marsh 500+ Lapwings and 900+ Golden Plover were among the many birds present. A Barn Owl was hunting early evening.

Numbers of wildfowl increased to around 1500 Wigeon and 900 Teal in and around the Broadwater today, two Goosanders flew west offshore and single Woodcock, Great Spotted Woodpecker and Red Kite were recorded.

On the sea today 16 Wigeon, 107 Teal, 3 Eiders, 9 Red-breasted Mergansers, 25 Common Scoter, 6 Red-throated and 3 Great Northern Divers, 7 Great Crested Grebes, 7 Kittiwakes and an adult Gannet were seen. Also of interest were a Water Rail, a Woodcock, 14 Snipe, Green and Great Spotted Woodpeckers, 2 Cetti's Warblers and 3 Bullfinches.

Birds of note on the sea included 3 Great Northern Diver, 6 Eider and Red-necked and Slavonian Grebe. 3000 Pink-feet spent varying parts of the day on the Grazing Marsh and 3 Pintail (2 drakes) were again on the Broadwater.
