Two Firecrests were still present around the Observatory reserve and a Goosander flew north over the pines. 

In the moth traps 8 Hebrew Characters, a Small Quaker and an Early Thorn were caught.

Holme Bird Observatory Friday 31st March 2023

A drake Garganey was again on the NWT pools, and on the sea 12 Eider, a Common Scoter, 8 Red-breasted Mergansers, a Fulmar, single Gannet, 2 Great Crested Grebes and 3 Sandwich Terns were seen. Also of interest were 10 Snipe, 2 Barn Owls, 2 Firecrests, a Woodlark, 15+ Chiffchaffs, 2 Redwings and 2 Siskins.

In the moth traps 2 Red Chestnuts, 2 Hebrew Characters, a Pine Beauty, Common Quaker and a Small Quaker were caught.

Holme Bird Observatory Thursday 30th March 2023

A passage of 15 Sand Martins and 3 Swallows were noted during the morning, with a Wheatear in the dunes, 2 Stonechats, 8 Chiffchaffs and 2 Siskins also of interest. On the sea a Red-breasted Merganser was seen, and a single Ruff was in front of the car park hide. A drake Garganey was again reported.

Two Hebrew Characters were in the moth traps.

Holme Bird Observatory Monday 27th March 2023

 The Observatory was in its own micro climate today, sheltered from the wind and with the sun shining it was lovely to sit and watch the Linnets feeding on the pine cones and a Barn Owl hunting over the marsh. A single Firecrest was seen near the Heli trap and the drake Garganey made some brief appearances in front on the first NWT hide.

In the nets 1 Chiffhchaff and 1 Blackbird were ringed

In the moths traps there were 7 Hebrew Characters and 2 Small Quakers.

Holme Bird Observatory Sunday 26th March 2023

Highlights include a single Barnacle Goose in a small flock of Canada Geese and a flock of around 40 Black-tailed Godwits with 2 birds in summer plumage. On the sea Red-breasted Mergansers were seen plus a single Common Scoter an Eider and 2 Velvet Scoter. A drake Garganey was briefly seen from the first NWT hide.

In the moth traps 11 Hebrew Characters and 2 Clouded Drabs were caught.

On the grazing marshes 70 Curlew, 20 Lapwings, 4 Black-tailed Godwits, 2 Ruff and a Snipe were the highlights, with a Barn Owl quartering close opposite the Broadwater and a Green Woodpecker calling from the pines. 3 Cetti's Warblers and 5 Chiffchaffs were counted and 2 Redpolls flew over calling.

A single Hebrew Character was in the moth traps.

On the sea today 10 Eider, 2 Common Scoter, 6 Red-breasted Mergansers, 6 Fulmars, 6 Great Crested Grebes, 3 Guillemots and 5 Sandwich Terns were counted. A Garganey was on the NWT briefly, and a Spoonbill flew west, with 71 Black-tailed Godwits, 7 Ruff, 3 Snipe, 2 Firecrests, 3 Cetti's Warblers, 7 Chiffchaffs, 2 Stonechats, 28 Meadow Pipits and 6 Pied Wagtails all counted.

In the moth traps 2 Hebrew Characters, 2 Clouded Drabs and a Grey Shoulder-Knot were caught.

A Red Admiral butterfly was seen, and at least 3 Smooth Newts were in the pond.

A blustery day with sharp thundery showers. A Barn Owl was hunting near the entrance gate early afternoon, and at least 4 Chiffchaffs were singing.

 A very windy day but the warmth in the sun saw the newts emerging in the pond, at least 10, and a Brimstone on the wing. Many Chiffchaffs were singing around the reserve and a flock of 14 Ruff flew west along Broadwater.

On the grazing marshes 42 Curlew, 16 Black-tailed Godwits, a Ruff, 35 Redshank and 6 Snipe were among the highlights. A total of 7 Chiffchaffs were around the recording area and a pair of Stonechats, and 5 Bullfinches were also of interest.

In the moth traps 3 Clouded Drabs and 8 Hebrew Characters were caught.

Holme Bird Observatory Sunday 19th March 2023

A male Firecrest was trapped in the morning and a female Merlin flew out across the marsh mid afternoon, and a pair of Garganey were in front of NWT hide 1 early afternoon. Also of interest were 2 Chiffchaffs, a Rock Pipit, and single Redpoll and Siskin flying over calling.

In the moth traps 8 Hebrew Characters, a Clouded Drab and 22 Dotted Borders were caught.

Three Brimstone butterflies and a Small Tortoiseshell were also seen.

Highlights today were a Greenshank at Thornham Harbour, a Firecrest near the west end of the pines, 9+ Chiffchaffs around the recording area, a Redwing, 3 Stonechats, a single Redpoll and 2 Siskins passing over.

In the moth traps a Dotted Border, 4 Hebrew Characters, 2 Clouded Drabs and a Small Quaker were caught.

Holme Bird Observatory Friday 17th March 2023

On the sea today 14 Eider, 8 Common Scoter, 15 Red-breasted Mergansers and 3 Great Crested Grebes were seen. Waders included 31 Avocets, 40 Golden Plover, 57 Curlew, 24 Black-tailed Godwits and 4 Ruff. Two Med Gulls were around the Broadwater and 2 Barn Owls were hunting, with a male Merlin also seen and at least 1 Firecrest on the site together with 4 Cetti's Warblers and 4 Chiffchaffs. Six Stonechats were counted south of the Broadwater and 2 Ravens were also noted.

In the moth traps 6 Dotted Borders, 5 Hebrew Characters, a Mottled Grey and a Dotted Chestnut were recorded.

 A very windy day but in the sheltered pines behind the Obs one Firecrest was seen along with 4 Goldcrest. Lots of Stonechats around the Obs again today, at least 9 on East Bank and 4 behind the Obs. The sea was fairly quiet wit 2 Gannets, 5 Eider, 1 Razorbill and 1 Great-crested Grebe seen.

 A Woodcock in flight mid morning over the Obs building heading out onto the grazing marsh was a surprise. On the sea there were ten Eider and five Red-breasted Merganser and at least nine Stonechat were on the East Bank of the reserve. A Grey Wagtail flew over heading West and at least one Bearded Tit was calling from the Broadwater edge.

A two hour sea watch whilst on the quiet side, did produce single Long-tailed Ducks and Manx Shearwaters, along with 12 Eider and 4 Gannets. On the grazing marsh there were 2 Spoonbills and a Great White Egret. Two adult Mediterranean Gulls were on the Broadwater, with two adults and 2Cy bird seen at Redwell Marsh earlier in the morning.  The moth traps produced 2 Mottled Grey and a Dotted Border.

On the sea today 13 Eider, a Long-tailed Duck, 9 Common Scoter, 8 Red-breasted Mergansers, 2 Fulmars and 3 Great Crested Grebes were recorded. A pair of Goosanders were in Thornham Channel. Three Spoonbills were briefly around the Broadwater and 8 Black-tailed Godwits were near the sea wall at Thornham, with at least 2 Barn Owls hunting. Four Stonechats were on the east bank and a Snow Bunting was on the beach.

A Firecrest was calling at the west end of the pines, and on the sea 15 Eider, 2 Common Scoter, 14 Red-breasted Mergansers, 2 Fulmars and 5 Great Crested Grebes were logged. Up to 3 Barn Owls were hunting during the day, and 3 Shorelark were on the beach between Gore Point and the Golf Course during the day. A Grey Wagtail was also of interest.

A single Hebrew Character made it into the moth trap.

Holme Bird Observatory Sunday 5th March 2023

On the sea today 45 Eider, 2000+ Common Scoter, 8 Red-breasted Mergansers, a Great Crested and a Black-necked Grebe were observed. Two Spoonbills were near the sea wall at Thornham and a Firecrest was calling near the Dowson hide mid afternoon. Five Stonechats were around the East Bank. 

A Hebrew Character was the first moth of spring.

Holme Bird Observatory Saturday 4th March 2023

On the sea today 35 Eider, 3000+ Common Scoter, 10 Red-breasted Mergansers and a Red-throated Diver were recorded, with a Firecrest trapped and ringed and 110 Curlew, 2 Black-tailed Godwits, 12 Ruff, Barn and Tawny Owl, 3 Shorelark and an arrival of 8+ Stonechats all of interest.

On the sea today 54 Eider, 3000+ Common Scoter, 8 Red-breasted Mergansers, 2 Red-throated Divers, 2 Guillemots and 3 Great Crested Grebes were seen. Six Avocets were around the Broadwater and a female Merlin, a Peregrine, 3 Shorelark and 18 Snow Buntings were also recorded.

Sea watching today produced 43 Eider, 20 Common Scoter, 7 Red-breasted Mergansers and a Red-necked Grebe. A Spoonbill was on the Broadwater along with 4 Avocets.
