ACCESS TO HOLME BIRD OBSERVATORY UPDATE

REPAIRS TO THE COASTAL FOOTPATH ARE COMPLETE AND FULL ACCESS IS RESTORED TO THE OBSERVATORY FROM THORNHAM. THANK YOU TO OUR MEMBERS AND VISITORS FOR THEIR CO-OPERATION.

Unfortunately another quiet, cold and damp day. A single Pink-footed Goose remained on the grazing marsh and the catch in the moth traps was unsurprisingly poor with only four species recorded. A hatch of insects after the rain brought the Swifts down, with around seventy hawking low over the trapping area.

A similarly quiet day at Walsey concluded with groups of hirundines hunting over Snipe's Marsh and the surrounding area. Around 20 Sand Martins, 2 House Martins and 50 Swallows were feeding over the water whilst up to 40 Swifts were on the wing over the reserve. Mid-afternoon a Hobby was drawn to the feeding flocks but left without success.
