Saturday 21st May 2016

A very poor day with little activity besides a few Swifts passing with about 40 during the day. Of note were 3 Turtle Doves, a Cuckoo, a Cetti's Warbler and a Lesser Whitethroat. There was no sign of the Short-eared Owl. In the moth traps a Poplar Hawk Moth, 2 Northern Drabs, 2 White Ermines, a Treble Lines and a Flame Shoulder were of interest.

Walsey Hills was also rather quiet unsurprisingly, the highlight being a Hobby that lingered over Snipe's Marsh for a few minutes mid-morning. The best of the rest included 2 adult Mediterranean Gulls flying over north towards Arnold's Marsh, 3 Cetti's Warblers singing, 3 Blackcaps, 5 Common Whitethroats, 1 Lesser Whitethroat, 2 Reed Warblers, 1 Sedge Warbler and a Great Spotted Woodpecker around the feeders. A few butterflies were on the wing in the afternoon including 1 Wall Brown, 1 Small Copper and several Orange-tips and Holly Blues.

A bizarre and impressive male Scorpion Fly Panorpa sp. - Walsey Hills, May 2016
