Monday 29th August 2016

The bank holiday dawned calm and sunny - a Yellow Wagtail  flew over west with small numbers of Meadow Pipits first thing. In the pines 6 Chiffchaffs and 2 Willow Warblers were feeding in the company of a Long-tailed Tit flock whilst singles of Common and Lesser Whitethroat and 4 Reed Warblers were also noted in the scrub.

In the afternoon 4 Stonechats and 2 Whinchats appeared on the East Bank and remained feeding on the lawn area in to the evening, whilst on the sea highlights included a Great Skua and 200 Common Scoter. Waders noted included Common and Green Sandpipers, Spotted Redshank, 4 Sanderling, 2 Greenshank and 55 Bar-tailed Godwits on the beach.

The moth traps proved relatively quiet but butterflies were much more plentiful; 11 Brown Argus, 8 Common Blue, 3 Painted Lady, 2 Wall Brown and Green-veined White were seen over the course of the day, many on the buddleias around the viewing platform.
