ACCESS TO HOLME BIRD OBSERVATORY UPDATE

REPAIRS TO THE COASTAL FOOTPATH ARE COMPLETE AND FULL ACCESS IS RESTORED TO THE OBSERVATORY FROM THORNHAM. THANK YOU TO OUR MEMBERS AND VISITORS FOR THEIR CO-OPERATION.

Holme Bird Observatory Saturday 31st July 2021

A changeable day with sunshine and showers, a major passage of Sand Martins took place with over 250 birds travelling west along the dunes and beach. Two Great White Egrets were around the Broadwater and the marsh,  and a Common Sandpiper was of note, with 2 distant Red Kites and a family of Stonechat also of interest.
 
Moths included 6 Oak Eggars, 13 Garden Tigers, 15 Scarce Footman, 7 Common Footman, 7 Ruby Tiger, 3 Rosy Footman, 6 Cloaked Minor, Small Elephant Hawk, 2 Small Scallop, 4 Drinker, 6 Rustic, 5 Brown Tail, 2 Scalloped Oak, Grey Dagger agg, 6 Yellow Tail, 8 Dingy Footman, 1 Pine Hawk, 1 Poplar Hawk, 2 Spectacle, Straw Dot, Red Twin-spot Carpet, Small Fan-footed Wave, Silver Y, 2 Large Yellow Underwing, Iron Prominent, Fen Wainscot, 2 Lesser Broad-bordered Yellow Underwing, 2 Nutmeg, Shuttle-shaped Dart, Early Thorn, Dark Arches, 2 Kent Black Arches and a Nut-tree Tussock.
 
Southern and Migrant Hawker were on the wing near the pond, with several Common Darters noted around the reserve and a single Azure Damselfly still present. Norfolk Little Stint Snettisham RSPB still +3.Turtle Doves 8.Spotted Redshanks 5.Spoonbills. On Tuesday 2.Garganey
