ACCESS TO HOLME BIRD OBSERVATORY UPDATE

REPAIRS TO THE COASTAL FOOTPATH ARE COMPLETE AND FULL ACCESS IS RESTORED TO THE OBSERVATORY FROM THORNHAM. THANK YOU TO OUR MEMBERS AND VISITORS FOR THEIR CO-OPERATION.

Holme Bird Observatory Friday 8th October 2021

On the sea today 5 Eider, a single Goosander and Red-breasted Merganser, 7 Red-throated Divers, Manx Shearwater, 25 Gannets, 3 Great Crested Grebes, 3 Guillemots, a Sandwich and 2 Arctic Terns were recorded. A ring-tail Hen Harrier flew west south of the Broadwater. Further migration included 590 Pink-feet, 145 Brents, Avocet, 17 Golden Plover east, 4 Snipe, Jay, 1350+ Starlings, 7 Blackbirds, 3 Song Thrushes, 4 Redwings, 2 Mistle Thrushes, 3 Bearded Tits, a Swallow, 2 House Martins, 6 Stonechats, 3 Grey Wagtails, 60 Meadow Pipits, 20 Rock Pipits, 2 Bramblings, 3 Redpolls, 11 Siskins, and a probable Richard's Pipit heard over the grazing marsh in the morning.
 
In the moth traps a staggering second Clifden Non-pareil (different from yesterday's) was on the back of the trap. Other moths recorded were 4 Large Yellow Underwings, 4 Setaceous Hebrew Characters, 2 Beaded Chestnuts, 5 Large Wainscots, 2 Shore Wainscots, 3 Feathered Ranunculus, 4 Lunar Underwings, 3 Barred Sallows, Merveille du Jour, Common Marbled Carpet, Turnip, Light Emerald and two Square-spot Rustic.
