ACCESS TO HOLME BIRD OBSERVATORY UPDATE

REPAIRS TO THE COASTAL FOOTPATH ARE COMPLETE AND FULL ACCESS IS RESTORED TO THE OBSERVATORY FROM THORNHAM. THANK YOU TO OUR MEMBERS AND VISITORS FOR THEIR CO-OPERATION.

Holme Bird Observatory Friday 6th May 2022

At sea 2 Great Crested Grebes, 12 Little Terns and 45 Sandwich Terns were seen. Other birds of note were a Great White Egret, 8 Red Kites, 3 Whimbrel, a Common Sandpiper, 3 Cuckoos, a Hobby, 8 Sand Martins, 28 Swallows, a House Martin, 3 Lesser Whitethroats, Grasshopper Warbler, 5 Yellow Wagtails, and 2 Dotterel were again seen on Green Bank during the morning.

A good range of moths included 4 Knot Grass, 2 V-Pugs, 2 Least Black Arches, 4 Green Carpets, a Garden Carpet, 7 Cinnabars, 2 Waved Umbers, a Small Elephant Hawk moth, 8 Muslins, 4 Red Twin-spot Carpets, 2 Angle-barred Pugs, a Streamer, 3 Northern Drabs, 2 White Ermine, 3 Buff Tip, a Chocolate Tip, Pebble Prominent, 2 Pine Beauties, 2 Treble Lines, a Lunar Marbled Brown, Water Carpet and a Sharp-angled Peacock.

There were plenty of butterflies too with 4 Brown Argus, 5 Green Hairstreaks, 6 Orange Tips, 3 Brimstones, 7 Walls, 8 Peacocks, 2 Small Heaths, 3 Common Blues, 7 Green-veined Whites, a Small White and 3 Speckled Woods. There were several damselflies on the wing with 12 Large Reds and a Common Blue also recorded.
