ACCESS TO HOLME BIRD OBSERVATORY UPDATE

REPAIRS TO THE COASTAL FOOTPATH ARE COMPLETE AND FULL ACCESS IS RESTORED TO THE OBSERVATORY FROM THORNHAM. THANK YOU TO OUR MEMBERS AND VISITORS FOR THEIR CO-OPERATION.

Holme Bird Observatory Monday 11th July 2022

On the sea today 115 Common Scoter, 1 Gannet, 285 Sandwich Terns, 5 Little Terns and 5 Common Terns were noted. A Greenshank and a Whimbrel flew over calling and an adult Cuckoo was in the dunes. Other birds of interest included 12 Sand Martins east, 19 Swallows, 4 House Martins, 7 Chiffchaffs, 5 Blackcaps, 6 Whitethroats, a Grasshopper Warbler, 2 Cetti's Warblers, 6 Sedge and 4 Reed Warblers, with at least 6 Stonechats around the reserves and 2 Yellow Wagtails logged overhead early morning.

In the moth traps a total of 94 species were recorded including 3 Ferns, 2 Cinnabars, 21 Common Footmen, Small Elephant and Elephant Hawks, 3 Riband Waves, Small Waved Umber, Small Rivulet, 15 Scarce Footmen, 10 Rosy Footmen, 2 Pine Hawks, 6 Dwarf Cream Waves, Dingy Footman, 2 Yellow Tail, Small Dusty Wave, 2 Small Fan-footed Waves, 2 Sharp-angled Peacocks, 2 Straw Dots, 10 Brown Tails, 12 Rustics, 2 Drinkers, 5 Smoky Wainscots, 3 Clays, Cloaked Minor, 5 Haworth's Pugs, Barred Straw, Clouded Border, Ear agg, 4 Buff Ermines, 3 White-line Darts, Archer's Dart, Small Blood-vein, 4 Least Carpets, Tawny-barred Angle, Willow Beauty, Privet Hawk, 7 Uncertains, Early Thorn, Peppered Moth, 4 Kent Black Arches, 3 Spectacle, Latticed Heath, 3 Garden Tiger, Chinese Character, 3 Dark Arches, 2 Brown-line Bright-eyes, Silver Ground Carpet, Large Yellow Underwing, Small Scallop, 2 Mottled Rustics, Heart & Club, 3 Single Dotted Waves, Common Carpet, Light Arches, Brown and Common Plumes.

Common Blue, Comma, Red Admiral, Gatekeeper, Ringlet and Meadow Brown were the butterflies recorded.
