ACCESS TO HOLME BIRD OBSERVATORY UPDATE

REPAIRS TO THE COASTAL FOOTPATH ARE COMPLETE AND FULL ACCESS IS RESTORED TO THE OBSERVATORY FROM THORNHAM. THANK YOU TO OUR MEMBERS AND VISITORS FOR THEIR CO-OPERATION.

Holme Bird Observatory Monday 25th July 2022

A total of 17 Spoonbills were seen during the day, with 36 Whimbrel passing over calling and 17 Black-tailed Godwits on the Broadwater. A juvenile Cuckoo was on the NWT reserve and Green and Great Spotted Woodpeckers were of interest, with 5 Sand Martins, 15 Swallows, and a juvenile Wheatear seen on the sea wall at Thornham.
 
Moths today included 3 Straw Dots, 2 Garden Pebbles, Dark and Red-barred Twin-spot Carpets, 3 Small Waved Umbers, 6 Smoky Wainscots, 6 Dark Arches, 2 Shaded Broad-bars, a Rush Veneer, 2 Setaceous Hebrew Characters, 41 Shuttle-shaped Darts, 11 Brown-line Bright-eyes, 3 Dark Sword-grass, Mere Wainscot, 30 Lesser Broad-bordered Yellow Underwings, 28 Turnips, 42 Rustics, 15 Garden Tigers, 16 Least Yellow Underwings, 4 Spectacles, 3 Cloaked Minors, 2 Dusky Sallows, a Broad Bordered Yellow Underwing, Scarce Footman, 2 Drinkers, 2 Southern Wainscots, 3 White Points, Knot Grass, Ruby Tiger, 2 Archer’s Darts, 9 Large Yellow Underwings, Yellow-tail, Marbled Clover, 2 Bright-line Brown-eye, 6 Lesser Yellow Underwings, 4 White-line Darts, Rosy Minor, Mouse Moth, Nutmeg, Silver Y, 3 Flame Shoulders, Clay, Dog’s Tooth, Fen Wainscot and Sallow Kitten.
 
Two Common Blues, a Small Skipper, 3 Commas, 28 Gatekeepers, 4 Red Admirals, 10 Meadow Browns and a Small Tortoiseshell were among the butterflies. Eight Migrant Hawkers were around the reserve in sheltered spots.
