ACCESS TO HOLME BIRD OBSERVATORY UPDATE

REPAIRS TO THE COASTAL FOOTPATH ARE COMPLETE AND FULL ACCESS IS RESTORED TO THE OBSERVATORY FROM THORNHAM. THANK YOU TO OUR MEMBERS AND VISITORS FOR THEIR CO-OPERATION.

Holme Bird Observatory Monday 23rd August 2021

On the sea today 5 Eider, 128 Common Scoter, 19 Gannets, Great Crested Grebe, an Arctic Skua west, probable Long-tailed Skua west, Guillemot, 42 Sandwich Terns, Arctic Tern and Little Gull were recorded. Two Great White Egrets, 6 Grey Herons moving west, 12 Little Egrets and a Spoonbill were of interest. A Red Kite drifted over and wader highlights included 6 Whimbrel, 53 Black-tailed Godwits, 7 Common Sandpipers and 2 Greenshank. Other migrants included 8 Chiffchaffs, 3 Willow Warblers, 4 Blackcaps, Lesser Whitethroat, 6 Whitethroats, 8 Stonechats and 2 Yellow Wagtails. A Pied Flycatcher was noted early morning.
 
Moths today included 3 Flame Shoulder, Straw Dot, 2 Spectacle, 6 Dingy Footman, 9 Flounced Rustic, 4 Sharp-angled Peacock, 2 Garden Pebble, Green Carpet, 6 Lesser Broad-bordered Yellow Underwing, 3 Shuttle-shaped Dart, White Point, Orange Swift, 7 Archer’s Dart, 2 Square-spot Rustic, Campion, 2 Cloaked Minor, 2 Scarce Footman, Nutmeg, Large Yellow Underwing, Silver Y, 2 White-line Dart and Setaceous Hebrew Character.
 
A good range of butterflies included Small Copper, 2 Brown Argus, Pained Lady, Green-veined White, Wall Brown, Comma, Speckled Wood, Red Admiral and Gatekeeper.
