ACCESS TO HOLME BIRD OBSERVATORY UPDATE

REPAIRS TO THE COASTAL FOOTPATH ARE COMPLETE AND FULL ACCESS IS RESTORED TO THE OBSERVATORY FROM THORNHAM. THANK YOU TO OUR MEMBERS AND VISITORS FOR THEIR CO-OPERATION.

Holme Bird Observatory Thursday 26th August 2021

Seawatching was the focus of observations today, with 33 Teal, 44 Common Scoter, 4 Fulmars, 5 Sooty Shearwaters west, a Balearic Shearwater west, 27 Gannets, 4 Great Crested Grebes, 23 Arctic Skuas, 15 Bonxies, 73 Sandwich Terns, 2 Common Terns and a Little Gull recorded passing offshore. A Sabine’s Gull and 5 Purple Sandpipers were seen past the NWT. Other birds of note were 2 Whimbrel, 25 Black-tailed Godwits, a Greenshank, a Peregrine, 16 Swallows, 30 House Martins, 3 Chiffchaffs and 3 Stonechats.
 
Moths were rather scarce today but included Spectacle, 2 White-line Darts, 2 Orange Swifts, 2 Flounced Rustics, Dingy Footman, Lime-speck Pug, 2 Lesser Broad-bordered Yellow Underwings, 3 Archer’s Darts, 2 Vine’s Rustics and a Flame Shoulder. At least 15 Common Darters and 6 Migrant Hawkers were swarming near the west entrance to the reserve, with Red Admiral and Speckled Wood also seen.
