ACCESS TO HOLME BIRD OBSERVATORY UPDATE

REPAIRS TO THE COASTAL FOOTPATH ARE COMPLETE AND FULL ACCESS IS RESTORED TO THE OBSERVATORY FROM THORNHAM. THANK YOU TO OUR MEMBERS AND VISITORS FOR THEIR CO-OPERATION.

Holme Bird Observatory Saturday 21st August 2021

 Further signs of migration today with highlights including 2 Whimbrel, 148 Curlew, 24 Black-tailed Godwits, 300+ Bar-tailed Godwits, 3 Green Sandpipers, 1 Greenshank, 12+ Snipe, a juvenile Cuckoo, Hobby, 15 Swallows, a House Martin, 6 Chiffchaffs, 2 Willow Warblers, 6 Blackcaps, 2 Whitethroats, 10 Sedge and 12 Reed Warblers, a first year female Pied Flycatcher was trapped and ringed, 2 Stonechats were on the east bank, and 7+ Yellow Wagtails flew over calling. On the seawatch a single Gannet, 2 Arctic Skuas, 2 Little Terns, 40+ Sandwich Terns, and 300+ Common Terns were counted.
 
Moths included 9 Dingy Footman, 7 Flame Shoulder, 5 Straw Dot, 2 Drinker, 2 Orange Swift, Common Rustic, Rush Veneer, 13 Archer’s Dart, 2 Cloaked Minor, Red Twin-spot Carpet, 22 Flounced Rustic, Rusty Dot Pearl, Rosy Wave, 6 Scarce Footman, 3 Canary Shouldered Thorn, Yellow Belle, 7 Lesser Broad Bordered Yellow Underwing, Pale Prominent, Small Fan-footed Wave, Shaded Broad-bar, 2 Yellow-tail, Spectacle, 2 Garden Pebble, 2 Riband Wave, Dusky Sallow, 2 Silver Y, Sharp-angled Peacock, 2 Dark Arches, 2 Lime-speck Pug, 2 Shuttle-shaped Dart, 11 White-line Dart, 4 Large Yellow Underwing, 2 Single Dotted Wave, Rustic, Clouded Border, Six-striped Rustic, 3 Setaceous Hebrew Character, Twin-spotted Wainscot, Poplar Hawk, Willow Beauty, Turnip and Humming-bird Hawk Moth.
 
At least 4 Painted Ladies were among the butterflies noted.
