Holme Bird Observatory Friday 29th July 2022

A very pleasant day with Whimbrel and Yellow Wagtail over early morning. The Polecat seen a few weeks ago was seen twice today near Dell Hide again and a Stoat was on the East Bank. Butterflies were numerous and a Hummingbird Hawk Moth was enjoying the Buddleia.

The nets were opened 9 new birds and 7 retraps were caught. New birds included a Kestrel and the second juvenile Green Woodpecker of the year!

A fairly cool night meant a reduction in moths but still quite a large variety with 55 species recorded thanks to Andy Culshaw for going through the traps. the most numerous was Garden Tiger moths with 20 caught, others included Tree-lichen Beauty, Saltmarsh Plume, Knot Grass, Least Yellow Underwing, Nutmeg, Pebble Prominent and many more.
