ACCESS TO HOLME BIRD OBSERVATORY UPDATE

REPAIRS TO THE COASTAL FOOTPATH ARE COMPLETE AND FULL ACCESS IS RESTORED TO THE OBSERVATORY FROM THORNHAM. THANK YOU TO OUR MEMBERS AND VISITORS FOR THEIR CO-OPERATION.

Holme Bird Observatory Sunday 3rd July 2022

 
On the sea today 6 Great Crested Grebes, 16 Common Scoter, 2 Gannets, 3 Fulmars, 83 Sandiwch Terns a Little Tern and a Med Gull were of interest. A Cuckoo was still around the pines and 2 Barn Owls, 5 Chiffchaffs, 4 Blackcaps, 2 Lesser Whitethroats, 4 Whitethroats and 5 Stonechats were of interest.
 
An excellent catch of moths included a Reddish Light Arches, 3 Poplar Greys, Buff Tip, 4 Scarce Footmen, 8 Cinnabars, Small Fan-footed Wave, 18 Common Footmen, Barred Straw, Fern, Small Waved Umber, Small Magpie, Yellow Tail, 3 Single Dotted Wave, Riband Wave, Small Emerald, Cloaked Minor, 4 Uncertain, Lychnis, 4 Rosy Footmen, Smoky Wainscot, 2 Large Yellow Underwings, 2 White-line Darts, Spectacle, Privet and Pine Hawks, 2 Light Arches, Haworth's Pug, 2 Coronets, Snout, Eyed Hawk, Garden Tiger, Burnished Brass, Ruby Tiger, 2 Dagger agg, Swallowtail, Rustic, 2 Dark Arches, V-Pug, 2 Buff Arches, Clay, Mottled Rustic, White Point, Dwarf Cream Wave, and Common Swift.

A few Common Darters and Black-tailed Skimmers were on the wing with Common Blue and Blue-tailed Damselflies also recorded, Essex Skipper, Small Skipper, Large Skipper, Large and Small White, Gatekeeper, Meadow Brown, Red Admiral and Small Tortoiseshell also seen.
 
Emperor Moth caterpillars are beginning to pupate with some already spinning silk in amongst the hawthorn. Others still stuffing their faces!
