ACCESS TO HOLME BIRD OBSERVATORY UPDATE

REPAIRS TO THE COASTAL FOOTPATH ARE COMPLETE AND FULL ACCESS IS RESTORED TO THE OBSERVATORY FROM THORNHAM. THANK YOU TO OUR MEMBERS AND VISITORS FOR THEIR CO-OPERATION.

Holme Bird Observatory Monday 15th August 2022

A muggy day with gathering rainclouds, on the Broadwater 17 Little Egrets, 2 Great White Egrets, 7 Grey Herons and 13 Spoonbills were noted with very high tides producing some good wader counts. A total of 12 Avocets, 174 Oystercatchers, 314 Golden Plover, 21 Lapwings, 13 Ringed Plovers, 12 Whimbrel, 191 Curlew, 79 Redshank, Greenshank, 6 Black-tailed Godwits, 3 Common and 5 Green Sandpipers were counted during the day. A passage of hirundines was noted with 18 Sand Martins, 35 Swallows and 15 House Martins counted, while 2 Pied Flycatchers were still present at the west end of the dunes and 7+ Stonechats, 10 Yellow Wagtails, a Grey Wagtail and 2 Redpolls were also of note.

In the moth traps 5 Flame Shoulders, 3 Sharp-angled Peacocks, Chinese Character, Lime-speck Pug, 6 White-lined Darts, 18 Flounced Rustics, 18 Setaceous Hebrew Characters, 2 Straw Dots, 5 Ferns, a Garden Tiger, Gold Swift, Straw Underwing, Dark Arches, Webb's Wainscot, 4 Archer's Darts, 3 Small Square Spots, Nutmeg, 3 White Points, 3 Common Wainscots, Turnip, Garden Pebble, Small Waved Umber, Yellow Tail, Pine Hawk, Double-striped Pug, 2 Vine's Rustics, Cloaked Minor and 3 Humming-bird Hawk Moths were of interest.

Butterflies included Small Copper, Common Blue and Wall Brown.
