ACCESS TO HOLME BIRD OBSERVATORY UPDATE

REPAIRS TO THE COASTAL FOOTPATH ARE COMPLETE AND FULL ACCESS IS RESTORED TO THE OBSERVATORY FROM THORNHAM. THANK YOU TO OUR MEMBERS AND VISITORS FOR THEIR CO-OPERATION.

Holme Bird Observatory Monday 22nd August 2022

Highlights today were a Great White Egret, 7 Spoonbills, 4 Red Kites, 5 Avocets, 371 Oystercatchers, 106 Golden Plover, 38 Lapwings, 6 Whimbrel, 237 Curlew, 40 Black-tailed Godwits, a Ruff, 9 Dunlin, Little Stint (from the Car Park Hide) and a Green Sandpiper. At sea 2 Gannets, 11 Little Terns, 24 Sandwich Terns and 12 Common Terns were counted. Two Green Woodpeckers, a Peregrine, 3 Willow Warblers, 5 Stonechats, and a Spotted Flycatcher on the east edge of the pines were also of interest.
 
In the moth traps 18 Archer's Darts, 3 Turnips, 2 Latticed Heaths, a Rusty Dot Pearl, Common Wave, 37 Flounced Rustics, 34 Setaceous Hebrew Characters, 7 White-lined Darts, Blood Vein, 3 Sharp-angled Peacocks, 27 Small Square Spots, 3 Large Yellow Underwings, a Cabbage, 5 Square-spot Rustics, Willow Beauty, 2 Yellow Belles, 5 Nutmegs, Broad-bordered Yellow Underwing, 6 Lesser Broad-bordered Yellow Underwings, Fern, Chinese Character, 12 Vine's Rustics, Rush Veneer, 3 Flame Shoulders, Straw Underwing, White Point, 2 Common Wainscots and a Lesser Yellow Underwing were caught. A Humming-bird Hawk Moth was on the buddleias.
