Highlights today were 1100+ Pink-feet on the marsh, a female Pintail over the Broadwater, 3 Red-breasted Mergansers in Thornham Channel, 2 Barn Owls hunting, a Cetti's Warbler calling near the Observatory, 3+ Stonechats, 7 Rock Pipits, 19+ Twite in Thornham Harbour, and 11 Snow Buntings at Thornham Point.

Monday 23rd November 2015

Highlights today included 4 Whooper Swans over west, 4 Goosanders west, 2 Woodcocks and 10 Snipe. Hunting in the area were 2 Barn Owls, a Peregrine Falcon, a Merlin and a ringtail Hen Harrier.

3 Shorelark and 17 Twite were towards Thornham and a Waxwing was seen at the east end of Holme village before flying west. A Cetti's Warbler was ringed.

A quieter day today, highlights included 8 Barnacle Geese on the grazing marsh, a Cetti's Warbler and Peregrine Falcon on the reserve and a Snow Bunting which flew east over the dunes. 3 Shorelark were seen towards Thornham Harbour and a Little Auk was seen going west on the seawatch.

Interest was once again focused on the sea today, the foul weather producing plenty of interest. Wildfowl counts included 7 Brent Geese, 16 Shelducks, 492 Wigeon, 172 Teal, 55 Pintail, 1 Scaup, 5 Eider, 262 Common Scoters, 66 Goldeneye, 20 Red-breasted Mergansers, 2 Goosander and 2 Red-throated Divers. Other highlights included 317 Kittiwakes, 5 Fulmars, 120 Gannets, 7 Pomarine Skuas, 3 Arctic Skuas, 182 Great Skuas and 5 Little Auks.

Most of the interest today was focused on the sea, where highlights included 2 Goldeneyes, 2 male Goosanders, 10 Red-throated Divers, 1 Great Skua, 3 Razorbills, 1 Guillemot and 5 Little Auks!

Highlights elsewhere around the reserve were a Merlin, a Stonechat along the East Bank, 8+ Twite towards Thornham and a Rock Pipit at Gore Point.

Tuesday 17th November 2015

The day started well with a flock of seven Whooper Swans over west, followed at Gore Point by a Greenshank, a Peregrine and two Lapland Buntings. Star billing today though went to an approachable Purple Sandpiper east of Gore Point on the shoreline. Other birds noted during the day included another Greenshank on the NWT pools, a Short-eared Owl over the grazing Marsh, a drake Goosander and at least 15 Twite frequenting the area around Thornham Harbour.

Monday 16th November 2015

Seawatching this morning produced counts of c2000 Common Scoter, 6 Red-throated Divers, 6 Gannets, 2 Eider. At least one Short-eared Owl was visible over the grazing marsh mid morning along with two Barn Owls. A Greenshank was again present near Gore Point, with a Merlin along the beach there and a Goosander also noted flying past west.

A day of deteriorating weather with rain arriving in the afternoon, however seawatching produced 1180 Common Scoters, 35 Red-breasted Mergansers, 4 Red-throated Divers, 7 Great Crested Grebes, and 5 Guillemots. A Goosander flew west beyond the Broadwater and a Peregrine was drifting over the pines mid morning.

With wind speeds in excess of 35mph at times unsurprisingly birds generally were thin on the ground, with the only notable sighting being a Greenshank at Gore Point early morning.

Wednesday 11th November 2015

An early sea watching session produced 15 Great-crested Grebes, 6 Red-breasted Mergansers, 6 Gannets, 4 Red-throated Divers, 4 Guillemots, 2 Little Auks and a Slavonian Grebe. A Merlin was watched arriving over the sea pausing briefly on the beach to rest, with two more (a pair) seen later in the morning over the grazing marsh. A juv Hen Harrier was again around the Broadwater area, an adult Med Gull flew east along the dunes and at least three Stonechats were noted.

Another blustery day with rain mid morning. Highlights were a Merlin, 5 Whooper Swans west, on the sea 300 Common Scoters, 9 Red-breasted Mergansers, 3 Red-throated Divers, 1 Fulmar, 22 Gannets, 1 Arctic Skua and 2 Bonxies. Also of note were a Water Rail, a Cetti's Warbler, a Stonechat near the east bank, 2 Bramblings, 15 Siskins, 3+ Snow Buntings on the beach and at least 1 Water Pipit.

Another rather grey and bleak day, birds of note were two Kingfishers and a large count of 56 Gadwall on the Broadwater, a Stonechat in brambles on the far side of the Broadwater opposite the Obs building and a Cetti's Warbler periodically singing from scrub adjacent to the disabled car park. A Barn Owl was also hunting early morning on the marsh south of the approach track.

Thursday 5th November 2015

Still signs of some migration today with over 2,500 Starlings counted moving west along the coast during the morning. Several small flocks of Lapwing, totalling 115 birds were also noted heading west and presumed newly arriving Pink-feet, c300 birds, were counted during the day coming in off the sea. Four Whooper swans were seen flying west past Gore Point,  a late Swallow and a Merlin were over the east bank mid morning and a ring tailed Hen Harrier was again noted over the grazing marsh.

Wednesday 4th November 2015

A rather grey, misty and at times wet day. Noteworthy sightings included a ringtail Hen Harrier that was seen on several occasions out over the grazing marsh and around the Broadwater, a Kingfisher, Barn Owl, Spotted Redshank, two Grey Wagtails, a pair of Stonechats, Cetti's Warbler and a Tawny Owl that was heard calling from the pines. Two more Water Pipits were also trapped and ringed our 6th and 7th of the autumn.

Another foggy day with little overhead movement. Highlights were a Short-eared Owl hunting the grazing marsh early afternoon, a Spotted Redshank and a Greenshank around the Broadwater, 3 Water Rails, a Chiffchaff, Blackcap, 5 Rock Pipits and 4 Siskins. There was no sign of yesterday's Ring Ouzel.

Highlights today were another Water Pipit trapped and ringed, a Ring Ouzel skulking near the Broadwater all day, and a ring-tailed Hen Harrier through east. Also of note were Spotted Redshank, Greenshank, a Barn Owl hunting, 3 Blackcaps, a Fieldfare ringed, 2 Redpolls, 10 Siskins and a Lapland Bunting over the east bank.
