Sky dancing Marsh Harriers gave a spring feel to the start of the day at least. Birds on the sea today included 30 Long-tailed Ducks, 12 Red-breasted Mergansers, 6 Eider and single Goldeneye and Great Northern Diver. Female Stonechats were noted along the main approach road and near the Observatory building.

Monday 30th January 2017

With no sign of the Ferruginous Duck for three days, it does seem to have left the site, perhaps coinciding with the arrival of milder weather from the west. On the sea today 400+ Common Scoters, and 20+ Red-breasted Mergansers were of note. A Water Rail was calling by the Broadwater. Off the Golf Course 2 Lapland Buntings were seen and a Stonechat was also recorded, together with a flock of 120 Linnets.

The Ferruginous Duck was not relocated again today, however the sea was very rewarding with a drake Scaup, 131 Long-tailed Ducks off the NWT dunes, 2 Common Scoters, 14 Goldeneye, 24 Red-breasted Mergansers, 2 Red-throated Divers, 1 Great Northern Diver east, and 20 Great Crested Grebes all recorded during the morning. A Greenshank was at Gore Point, 40 Twite flew over Gore Point and 45 Snow Buntings were on the beach.

There was no sign of the Ferruginous Duck today but on the sea a Great Northern Diver, 18 Long-tailed Ducks, 8 Eiders, a Goldeneye, 9 Red-breasted Mergansers, 2 Great Crested Grebes, a Guillemot and a Kittiwake were of note. A Peregrine was hunting the marsh mid morning and a Cetti's Warbler was by the Broadwater.

A grey and largely foggy day with the male Ferruginous Duck remaining in situ on the Broadwater. Both Barn and Tawny Owl were recorded during the day and a male Stonechat was frequenting the East Bank. Five Snow Buntings were also on the beach at the western end of the NWT reserve near the golf course.

Once again the Ferruginous Duck could be found on the Broadwater. A flock of around 35 Snow Buntings were along the beach and on the sea birds noted included 6 Goldeneye, 5 Red-breasted Merganser, 5 Fulmar, 2 Long-tailed Duck and single Eider and Black-throated Diver.

On the sea today 2 Scaup, 1 Eider, 5 Long-tailed Ducks, 80 Common Scoters, 3 Velvet Scoters, a Goldeneye, 25 Red-breasted Mergansers, 10 Red-throated Divers, 1 black-throated Diver, 3 Great Northern Divers, a Fulmar, a Shag, 10 Great Crested Grebes, and 2 Slavonian Grebes. Also of note were the Ferruginous Duck still present, 1 Peregrine, a Cetti's Warbler, 2 Bullfinches, and 40 Twite still in Thornham Harbour.

Friday 20th January 2017

Once again the Ferruginous Duck was on the Broadwater and the flock of Twite, around 40 birds, were still around Thornham Harbour. On the sea there were counts of  16 Red-breasted Mergansers, 11 Red-throated and single Great Northern and Black-throated Divers, 6 Long-tailed Duck, 3 Slavonian Grebes, 2 Goldeneye and a single Velvet Scoter. A juvenile Glaucous Gull flew west along the beach and a Kingfisher and Spotted Redshank were in Thornham Harbour.

Wednesday 18th January 2017

The Ferruginous Duck was in its usual place on the south side of Broadwater, and a drake Common Scoter was also on the bank near the waters edge. A Waxwing was feeding on Rosehips briefly near the Dowson Hide at the west end of the reserve. On the sea there was plenty of activity including 2 Eiders, 2 Long-tailed Ducks, 28 Red-breasted Mergansers, 6 Red-throated Divers, 2 Black-throated Divers, 3 Great Northern Divers, 1 Fulmar, 7 Great Crested Grebes, 2 Red-necked Grebes, 4 Slavonian Grebes, 5 Razorbills, and 2 Guillemots. A Peregrine was hunting the marsh.

Tuesday 17th January 2017

The Ferruginous Duck was present again all day showing well at times. A Peregrine was hunting and at Thornham Harbour 38 Twite, a Merlin and a Kingfisher were of note, with a Spotted Redshank in the channel. A group of 8 White-fronts were with Pinkfeet on the grazing marshes, and on the sea highlights included a Long-tailed Duck, Black-throated and Red-throated Divers, a Slavonian and a Red-necked Grebe, single Velvet Scoter and a Razorbill.

Monday 16th January 2017

Very much business as usual today with the Ferruginous Duck on the Broadwater, the two pairs of Bearded Tits frequenting the north-eastern end of the reed bed and a count of 42 Twite made in Thornham Harbour. Both Barn and Tawny Owls were recorded, the latter having attracted the attention of the local Blackbirds which in turn led to it revealing its tree top roosting site.

Sunday 15th January 2017

The Ferruginous Duck spent the day sleeping on the south side of Broadwater opposite the steps just west of the Observatory. A drake Common Scoter was also seen on Broadwater and a Water Rail was in the same area.

Saturday 14th January 2017

A beautiful day with no serious damage to report at Holme following yesterday's high tide. Highlights were the drake Ferruginous Duck which was again on the Broadwater, 3+ Tundra Bean Geese, 11 White-fronts, a drake Common Scoter also on the Broadwater, 130 Golden Plover, Merlin and Peregrine hunting, and at least 3 Stonechats. Four Bearded Tits were still in the reeds around the Broadwater. A Barn Owl was hunting out towards Thornham.

The Ferruginous Duck was showing well during the morning opposite the Observatory, and a drake Scaup was on the Broadwater, as was a single drake Common Scoter. A group of 10 White-fronted Geese was on the grazing marshes together with over 2000 Pink-feet and 250 Brents. At least 3 Stonechats were around the recording area.

The drake Ferruginous Duck was again present on the Broadwater today with two pairs of Bearded Tits frequenting the reeds along the North-eastern edge. In Thornham Harbour the Twite flock were again present numbering around 30 birds, with a Spotted Redshank also seen in the harbour creek.

Sunday 8th January 2017

A group of 14 White-fronted Geese were on the grazing marsh in the afternoon and the Ferruginous Duck was showing well at times. On the sea  500 Common Scoters, 8 Eiders, 2 Red-breasted Mergansers, a Black-throated Diver and 2 Fulmars were seen. At Thornham Harbour 53 Twite were reported and a Spotted Redshank was in the channel, while at Gore Point a Greenshank was of note. 2 Stonechats were in the dunes and a Brambling was in Holme Village. A Lapland Bunting flew over calling.

Saturday 7th January 2017

There was no sign of the Ferruginous Duck today, or the Red-crested Pochards, but the 4 Bearded Tits continued to show along the northern edge of Broadwater, and offshore a Black-throated Diver was seen just off the west end of the NWT reserve with 5 Scaup flying past and a Glaucous Gull also seen. A single Rock Pipit and a single Siskin flew over calling.

Friday 6th January 2017

Highlights today were the Ferruginous Duck which was still present, though elusive, 4 Red-crested Pochards were also on Broadwater for much of the day and a Common Scoter was also of interest. A Stonechat was around the east bank and 4 Bearded Tits were still feeding up and down the northern edge of Broadwater. At Thornham 30 Twite were still present together with a Spotted Redshank and at least 1 Rock Pipit.

Highlights today were 5 Tundra Bean Geese and 3 White-fronted Geese in amongst the Pink-feet on the grazing marsh, the Ferruginous Duck was seen again on the Broadwater, and 2 Glaucous Gulls were seen following trawlers offshore.

The Drake Ferruginous Duck was again present on the Broadwater along with a smart drake Common Scoter. A walk to nearby Thornham Harbour gave nice views of the Twite flock, with several of the birds noted wearing colour rings, the below bird having originated from Derbyshire. Other birds of note here included a Peregrine, a flyover Lapland Bunting and a pair of Stonechats.

Tuesday 3rd January 2017

The Ferruginous Duck remained on the Broadwater throughout the day, though as yesterday, elusive at times. The juvenile Glaucous Gull was seen off Gore Point and presumably the same bird later in the day at Thornham Harbour along with the Twite flock. On the sea there were three Long-tailed Ducks and three Velvet Scoters whilst a pair of very confiding Bearded Tits were in the reeds along the eastern edge of the Broadwater.

Monday 2nd January 2017

A drake Ferruginous Duck was on the Broadwater today although it was frequently out of view. Two Bearded Tits and a Cetti's Warbler were of note in the reeds and on the grazing marsh 3 Barnacle Geese were with Pink-feet south of the river Hun. On the sea a single Long-tailed Duck, 500 Common Scoters, a Velvet Scoter, 6 Red-breasted Mergansers, 3 Red-throated Divers, a Fulmar, 9 Gannets and 3 Great Skuas were recorded. Five Lapland Buntings were on the beach near the Golf Course.
