Holme Bird Observatory Thursday 25th May 2023

An Osprey was seen alighted in the dunes early morning.

In the moth traps 4 Vine's Rustics, a Lime-speck Pug, 7 Flame Shoulders, a Coronet, 4 Treble Lines, Pine Beauty, Rustic Shoulder-Knot, Marbled Minor sp, Mottled Rustic, Shuttle Shaped Dart and Sand Dart were caught. Green Hairstreak, Small Copper and Wall Brown were the butterflies seen.

Holme Bird Observatory Tuesday 23rd May 2023

Two Wood Sandpipers, two Little Stints and a drake Garganey were all present on Thornham Pools. A pair of Garganey were still present on the NWT pools, viewed on occasions from the first hide. A Hobby and Spoonbill were also recorded during the day.  

The moth traps produced two Treble Lines, Pine Beauty, Heart&Dart, Large Yellow Underwing and Vines Rustic.

Holme Bird Observatory Monday 22nd May 2023

At least one Spoonbill was again present with a Little Ringed Plover, 8 Black-tailed Godwits, Common Sandpiper and Wood Sandpiper all of interest. Cuckoo and Barn Owl were also noted. The cloudy conditions produced counts of 33 Swifts, 3 Sand Martins, 15 Swallows and 3 House Martins during the day, while 4 Stonechats were also observed.

In the moth traps 2 Treble Lines, a Setaceous Hebrew Character, Muslin, Shuttle-shaped Dart, Vine's Rustic, Flame Shoulder and Heart & Dart were caught. Butterflies were rather scarce in the cool winds but 2 Brown Argus, 2 Small Copper, a Green-veined White and 3 Wall Browns were seen.

Holme Bird Observatory Sunday 21st May 2023

Highlights were a Fulmar over the marsh, a Little Tern over the Broadwater, 3 Spoonbills, a Whimbrel, 2 Common Sandpipers, 5 Lesser Whitethroats, 5 Whitethroats and a Stonechat.

In the moth traps a Yellow Belle, 2 Vine's Rustics, Green Carpet, 3 Flame Shoulders, Marbled Minor sp, Small Elephant Hawk, Mottled Rustic, 3 Treble Lines and a Setaceous Hebrew Character were caught.
 
Butterflies included the first of the Brown Argus on the wing, with Green Hairstreak, Orange Tip and Wall Brown also noted. Large Red, Azure and Blue-tailed Damselflies were recorded around the pond.

Holme Bird Observatory Saturday 20th May 2023

A Quail was heard near the Saltings in the morning and a drake Garganey was on the NWT pools. On the sea 4 Eider and 10 Gannets were counted, with a Spoonbill, 90 Black-tailed Godwits, 2 Common Sandpipers and a Greenshank all noted. A Grasshopper Warbler was heard near the car park.

In the moth traps a Bedstraw Hawk Moth, 2 Green Carpets, Yellow Belle, Vine's Rustic and Treble Lines were caught. Butterflies included 2 Small Coppers, 4 Green Hairstreaks and a Common Blue.

Holme Bird Observatory Friday 19th May 2023

Highlights today were 2 drake Garganey, one near Thonrham Harbour and the other at NWT hide 3. Offshore 170 Common Scoter were counted with 8 Little Terns, 15 Sandwich Terns and 4 Common Terns recorded. A Great White Egret and 2 Spoonbills were of interest. Two Little Ringed Plovers, 33 Black-tailed Godwits and 2 Common Sandpipers were around the Broadwater and freshmarsh. A Grasshopper Warbler was near the Car Park Hide.
 
In the moth traps 3 Cinnabars, 3 Yellow Belles, 2 Muslins, a White Ermine, Rush Veneer, 4 Treble Lines, Latticed Heath, Garden Pebble, 4 Shuttle-shaped Darts, an Eyed Hawk, Purple Bar, Vine's Rustic, Fern and Flame Shoulder were caught. Butterflies came out in the afternoon sunshine including Painted Lady, Holly Blue, Green Hairstreak, and Small Heath

 North East wind kept the temperatures down today but a good range of butterflies were seen including Brown Argus, Small Heath and Common Blue. Moth highlight was a Yellow Belle.

On the sea were 3 Eider close in plus 18 Gannets went east. Other bird highlights were one Hobby east and one Cuckoo.

Moths were rather poor with just 5 Muslin, 2 Treble Lines, Vine's Rustic and Flame Shoulder caught overnight. Three Large Red Damselflies were around the pond and butterflies included a Holly Blue, 12 Wall Browns, 5 Orange Tips, 6 Green Hairstreaks and a Small Copper.
 
The drake Garganey, 2 Wood Sandpipers and a Little Stint were at Thornham with a Common Sandpiper along Broadwater edge and 26 Black-tailed Godwits on the NWT pools.

Holme Bird Observatory Monday 15th May 2023

Another cool northerly breeze today, with the drake Garganey, 3 Wood Sandpipers, a Little Ringed Plover and an adult Little Stint all at Thornham. Also of interest were a Spoonbill, 5 Little Terns east, Cuckoo, 22+ Swifts, 25 House Martins and 14 Swallows, and a pair of Stonechats.

Moths included 2 Bordered Whites, a Streamer, 5 Muslin, Pine Beauty, White Ermine, Flame Shoulder, 3 Northern Drabs, Waved Umber, 2 Treble Lines, 2 Swallow Prominent, Vine's Rustic, 5 Shuttle-shaped Darts, an Angle-barred Pug, Cinnabar, 2 Nutmeg, a Chocolate Tip, Heart & Dart, Turnip, Yellow Belle, Silver Y and Sharp-angled Peacock. Butterflies noted were 4 Wall Browns, 3 Green Hairstreaks, 2 Small Coppers and a Brimstone. Two Large Red Damselflies were near the main pond.

At Thornham a drake Garganey and 3 Wood Sandpipers were still present near the sea wall and 2 Little Ringed Plovers were also of interest. A Spoonbill was near the Broadwater.

In the moth traps a Pine Beauty, Northern Drab, Shuttle-shaped Dart, 3 Flame Shoulders, Hebrew Character, 3 Muslin, Green Carpet and Powdered Quaker were caught. Butterflies included 4 Orange Tip, 3 Small Coppers, 3 Walls and 4 Green Hairstreaks.

There was no further sign of yesterday's Hoopoe, but a drake Garganey and 3 Wood Sandpipers were seen near the sea wall at Thornham, a Great White Egret and 2 Spoonbills were present, and a mixed flock of 80+ Swifts, 20+ House Martins and 25 Swallows were present near the pines. Two Barn Owls and a Cuckoo were also of interest. 

In the moth traps 6 Muslins, a Streamer, Shuttle-shaped Dart and Treble Lines were caught.

A Hoopoe was seen at the east end of the dunes on the NWT reserve at 1.40pm. At Thornham a Wood Sandpiper and a drake Garganey were showing near the sea wall. At least 2 Cuckoos were present.

The Garganey pair was again at Thornham Harbour and offshore single Little and Sandwich Terns were recorded, with a Common Tern flying west over the Broadwater. Three Cuckoos and 2 Barn Owls were also noted, with 8 Swifts, 10 Swallows, 4 Willow Warblers, 4 Blackcaps, 3 Lesser Whitethroats, 5 Whitethroats, 10 Sedge and 6 Reed Warblers also recorded.

In the moth traps a Small Waved Umber, 2 Muslins, Dotted Chestnut, 2 Northern Drabs, Knot Grass, Chinese Character, Silver Y, Yellow Belle and Shuttle-shaped Dart were caught.

Butterflies included Comma, Brimstone, Green-veined White, Green Hairstreak, and Holly Blue.

Two Garganey were again at Thornham and on the reserves 2 Black-tailed Godwits and a Common Sandpiper were of note, with a substantial passage of 150+ Swifts during the afternoon, together with 45 Swallows, 25 House Martins, a singing Garden Warbler, 2 Stonechats and 2 Yellow Wagtails all recorded.

In the moth traps there was more activity with 3 Waved Umber, an Eyed Hawk Moth, 2 Shuttle-shaped Darts, a Ruby Tiger, 4 Muslins, a Purple Bar, Northern Drab, Treble Lines, Small Waved Umber, Powdered Quaker, and White Ermine all recorded.

Highlights today were 6 Eider just off the beach, a Spoonbill, 3 Common Sandpipers around the Broadwater and NWT pools, 85+ Swallows and 16 Swifts passing through, 5 Willow Warblers, 3 Blackcaps, 2 Lesser Whitethroats, 12 Sedge Warblers, 3 Reed Warblers, a Nightingale still singing opposite the NOA car park, and a single Yellow Wagtail over calling. Two Garganey were still near Thornham Harbour on the freshmarsh.

In the moth traps a single Pale Prominent, a Diamond-back and a Plain Fanner were of interest, with a Hairy Hawker also seen at the west end of the reserve, a Large Red Damselfly was the first recorded to date, and butterflies included 10 Green Hairstreaks, a Holly Blue, 2 Wall Browns, a Small Copper, 4 Orange Tips, 3 Green-veined Whites, 2 Peacocks and a Brimstone.

Holme Bird Observatory Saturday 6th May 2023

Highlights today were a drake Garganey at Thornham, together with 32 Ruff, and on the reserves a Turtle Dove was flushed on Broadwater Road, 4 Cuckoos, a Barn Owl, 2 Firecrests, 16 Swallows, 5 House Martins, 8 Chiffchaffs, 5 Willow Warblers, 2 Blackcaps, 3 Lesser Whitethroats, 5 Whitethroats, 20 Sedge Warblers, 6 Reed Warblers, 2 Stonechats, a Wheatear, 11 Yellow Wagtails and a Tree Pipit were all of note. A Nightingale was heard opposite the car park and a Garden Warbler and Grasshopper Warbler were both trapped during ringing today. 

Moths included a Shuttle-shaped Dart in the traps, 2 Cinnabars and 3 Green Longhorns on the wing during the day, butterflies included 2 Orange Tips, 2 Small Whites, 5 Green Hairstreaks, 3 Wall Browns, Red Admiral, 2 Peacocks, a Holly Blue, Brimstone and 2 Small Coppers.

Holme Bird Observatory Friday 5th May 2023

At Thornham a pair of Garganey was again seen, with Little Ringed Plover, 2 Whimbrel, 25 Ruff and a Wood Sandpiper also noted. Six Cuckoos were seen in the dunes and a Barn Owl was hunting in the morning, with 7+ Swifts feeding ahead of a heavy shower, and 3 Yellow Wagtails seen with the ponies in the dunes. Ten Swallows passed through and common warblers included 8 Chiffchaffs, 4 Willow Warblers, 3 Blackcaps, 4 Lesser Whitethroats, 3 Common Whitethroats, 15 Sedge and 5 Reed Warblers. 

In the moth traps a Northern Drab, Muslin, Powdered Quaker and Pine Beauty were caught. Green Hairstreak, Brimstone, Green-veined White, Small Heath, Wall Brown and Small Copper were all on the wing during the afternoon.

Holme Bird Observatory Thursday 4th May 2023

A strong easterly kept many birds lying low today, on the sea a Great Crested Grebe, 20 Little Terns, 3 Sandwich Terns and an Arctic Tern were seen, while on the pools 13 Black-tailed Godwits were noted. At least 2 Redstarts, male and female, were seen in the early afternoon.

A single Hebrew Character was the only moth in the traps, and an Orange Tip, Wall Brown, 2 Peacocks and 4 Green Hairstreaks were seen on the wing.

Many migrants had cleared out overnight ahead of the rain, but there were still 36 Pink-feet on the grazing marshes, and on the sea 5 Eider, 6 Sandwich Terns and 2 Common Terns were counted. Near Thornham sea wall 3 Little Ringed Plovers, 6 Whimbrel and 8 Ruff were noted, with a Greenshank around the reserves and 6 Med Gulls recorded, together with 2 Cuckoos, 2 Barn Owls, 15 Swallows, 4 Lesser Whitethroats, 6 Whitethroats, 12 Sedge Warblers, 4 Reed Warblers, 4 Stonechats, 7 Wheatears and 3 Yellow Wagtails.

In the moth traps 6 Muslins, 2 Cochylis atricapitana, 2 Water Carpets and a Pine Beauty were caught, with a Cinnabar found hatching near the Obs door.

Butterflies included Green Hairstreak, Green-veined White, Brimstone, Peacock

Highlights were 4 Whimbrel, Cuckoo, Barn Owl, 6+ Swallows, 4 Chiffchaffs, 15+ Willow Warblers, 5 Blackcaps, 2 Lesser Whitethroats, 12 Whitethroats, Grasshopper Warbler, 10 Sedge and 3 Reed Warblers, 4 Yellow Wagtails, 5 Tree Pipits and 2 Redpolls.

A total of 32 new birds were ringed including 9 Whitethroats and 9 Willow Warblers, 2 Lesser Whitethroats and 3 Reed Warblers. 

In the moth traps a Muslin, Northern Drab and a Pine Beauty were caught, with butterflies including 6 Green Hairstreaks, an Orange Tip, 2 Green-veined Whites, 2 Brimstones, 2 Small Coppers and 8 Peacocks seen during the day. A Silver Y moth was also noted.

At Redwell Marsh the Garganey was again showing with 2 Green Sandpipers also of interest.

A Common Tern passed over west and 3 Whimbrel flew through calling. Two Cuckoos, a Barn Owl, 7 Swallows, 4 Cetti's Warblers, 20 Chiffchaffs, 2 Willow Warblers, 4 Blackcaps, 5 Lesser Whitethroats, 4 Whitethroats, a Grasshopper Warbler, 10 Sedge Warblers, 3 Reed Warblers, 4 Stonechats, 9 Yellow Wagtails, 2 Redpolls and 2 Siskins were also recorded. A male Tree Pipit was singing in the pines early morning and a drake Mandarin was found opposite the Broadwater hide, showing at times during the afternoon. 

A Lesser Swallow Prominent and a Common Quaker were in the traps, and butterflies included 3 Brimstones, 5 Peacocks, 3 Green Hairstreaks, 2 Small Coppers, 3 Green-veined Whites and a Small White.

A day of visible migration including 19 Whimbrel, 65 Black-tailed Godwits, 7 Ruff, 4 Greenshank, an 6 Sandwich and one Arctic Tern offshore, 10 Med Gulls, Cuckoo, Barn Owl, 30 Swifts, 50 Swallows, 30 House Martins, 15 Chiffchaffs, 4 Willow Warblers, 4 Blackcaps, 4 Lesser Whitethroats, 12 Whitethroats, a Grasshopper Warbler, 15 Sedge and 2 Reed Warblers, a female Pied Flycatcher in the dunes, a male Redstart just west of the car parks, 2 Whinchats, 6 Stonechats, 8 Wheatears, 7 Yellow Wagtails, a Grey Wagtail and 2 Siskins all recorded during the day.

A Northern Drab and a Dawn Flat-body were in the moth traps, with a mysterious Puss Moth adult found in the Observatory!

Two Little Ringed Plovers, 3 Whimbrel, 6 Black-tailed Godwits, 7 Ruff, 2 Green Sandpipers and a Greenshank were the waders of note, with a Merlin, Peregrine, 5 Swallows, 10 Chiffchaffs, 2 Willow Warblers, 4 Blackcaps, 4 Whitethroats, a Grasshopper Warbler, 12 Sedge and 3 Reed Warblers, and 2 Redpolls also observed.

 A flock of 41 Pink-feet were still present and a Great White Egret was of interest, with a Greenshank, 2 Cuckoos, 2 Barn Owls, 4 Swallows, 2 Willow Warblers, 2 Blackcaps, Lesser Whitethroat, 2 Whitethroats, a Grasshopper Warbler, 6 Sedge and 2 Reed Warblers, 2 Redstarts, 3 Stonechats and a Yellow Wagtail also recorded.

Holme Bird Observatory Tuesday 25th April 2023

Highlights included a Spoonbill, 2 Little Ringed Plovers, 3 Whimbrel, 1 Grasshopper Warbler, a female Redstart, single Stonechat and Wheatear, and 5 Yellow Wagtails. 

A male Muslin moth was in the moth trap.

Highlights today were a single Spoonbill, 2 Little Ringed Plover near the sea wall at Thornham, 3 Whimbrel, 12 Black-tailed Godwits, 6 Ruff, Green Sandpiper, Greenshank, Cuckoo, Barn Owl, 2 Sand Martins, 7 Swallows, 11 House Martins, 3 Willow Warblers, 7 Blackcaps, Lesser Whitethroat, Whitethroat, 3 Sedge Warblers, 2 Stonechats, 2 Wheatears, 3 Yellow Wagtails and a single Redpoll.

In the moth traps a Water Carpet, Dotted Chestnut, Hebrew Character, 2 Muslins, a Northern Drab and a Pine Beauty were caught.

Highlights today included 4 Whimbrel, 8 Black-tailed Godwits, a Cuckoo, Barn Owl, 6 Sand Martins, 21 Swallows, 4 House Martins, 12 Chiffchaffs, 7 Willow Warblers, 5 Blackcaps, a Lesser Whitethroat, 3 Whitethroats, 4 Grasshopper Warblers, 9 Sedge Warblers, 1 Stonechat, 25 Yellow Wagtails and 2 Redpolls. On the sea a single Common Scoter, Red-breasted Merganser and 2 Gannets were noted. 

In the moth traps a Common Quaker, Powdered Quaker, Northern Drab and Lunar Marbled Brown were caught, and butterflies in the afternoon included a Small Copper, 2 Green Hairstreaks, 2 Peacocks and 3 Brimstones.
